Kazakh wedding ceremony Betashar is included in the UNESCO Intangible Heritage List

The Kazakh traditional wedding ceremony Betashar has been included in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List, the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan reports . This happened at the 19th session of the UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage in the capital of Paraguay, Asuncion.

The nomination “Wedding ceremony Betashar” was submitted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan with the support of the Ministry of Culture and Information of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

"Betashar is one of the most vivid and widely practiced rituals of the Kazakh people. Its recognition as an integral part of the intangible cultural heritage of humanity will strengthen our common efforts to consistently study, preserve and popularize the priceless traditions passed down from generation to generation," emphasized Kazakhstan's Permanent Representative to UNESCO Askar Abdrakhmanov.

Now the number of elements with Kazakhstan's participation in the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity has reached 14.

Of these, six are national:

  1. "Kazakh traditional art of dombra kuy" (2014);
  2. “Kazaksha Kures” (2016);
  3. "Asyk atu" (2017);
  4. "Spring festive rituals of Kazakh horse breeders" (2018);
  5. "Orteque" (2022);
  6. "Betashar" (2024).

And eight multinational ones:

  1. “Traditional knowledge and skills of making Kazakh and Kyrgyz yurt” (2014);
  2. "Aitys" (2015);
  3. "Nauryz" (2016);
  4. “The culture of making and dividing thin flatbread: katyrma, lavash, yufka, yupka” (2016);
  5. "The Legacy of Korkyt Ata" (2018);
  6. “Togyz kumalak” (2020);
  7. "Hunting with Birds of Prey" (2021);
  8. "Traditions of stories about Kozhanasyr" (2022).

By the way, Mongolia also joined the multinational nomination “Nauryz”, becoming the 13th country to recognize this holiday as part of its heritage within the framework of UNESCO.
