The Armenian government has approved a bill on the country's accession to the European Union, Informburo reports with reference to News.am.
At a government meeting, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said that in the fall of 2023, he gave a speech in the European Parliament, where he said that “Armenia is ready to be as close to the EU as the EU deems possible.” His speech interested many Armenian citizens: more than 50 thousand people signed the document, which allowed the drafting of a bill on the beginning of the process of joining the European Union.
"The government's de jure position is as follows: the government does not object to the adoption of this law, but I will note what this means. This does not mean Armenia's membership in the EU in the literal sense of the word, since achieving this point or making a decision on this point cannot be at the level of a law or even a government decision. The decision can only be made through a referendum," Pashinyan explained.
He added that under any of the scenarios, Armenia can become a member of the EU only if a referendum is called and, in accordance with the procedure stipulated by the Constitution, a certain number of votes are received from the number of referendum participants.
Pashinyan noted that many Armenian citizens expect a quick solution to the issue of visa liberalization with the European Union.
“The EU’s decision for Armenia to become part of the European Instrument for Peace is an important political decision,” Pashinyan concluded.
