The Russian Foreign Ministry reported that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has left the country and his post, giving instructions to peacefully transfer power, BBC News Russian Service reports .
Syrian President Bashar al-Assad left Damascus amid a large-scale offensive by terrorist militants on government positions in the republic.
According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, Assad made this decision following negotiations involving several parties involved in the armed conflict. Russia, as noted, maintains contacts with all Syrian opposition groups, which is confirmed by a statement published on the Russian Foreign Ministry's Telegram channel.
Assad's whereabouts are currently unknown. Some sources suggest that his plane may have crashed or that he may have sought asylum in another country.
