Kazakhstan will refrain from submitting an application to BRICS in the foreseeable future, including due to the length of time it takes to consider the issue of accession and other issues "related to the development prospects of this association." This was stated by the adviser and press secretary of the President of Kazakhstan Berik Uali, Tengrinews reports .
According to him, President Tokayev has received proposals to join BRICS, an association of states with developing economies. But now, taking into account national interests, he gives priority to the UN "as a universal and uncontested organization in which all current international problems can and should be discussed."
Tokayev's press secretary confirmed that the head of state will attend the BRICS summit in Kazan on October 22-24, where he plans to speak at an extended meeting in the "outreach" format. Russia is chairing BRICS this year.
The BRICS group was created in 2006 by Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. In 2024, Iran, the UAE, Ethiopia and Egypt joined the group. In 2024, Malaysia and Azerbaijan submitted official applications to join BRICS. A few months ago, Turkey submitted an official application to join BRICS.
