New flood forecast system tested in Kazakhstan

Posted on 30/11/2024

The Tasqyn flood forecasting and modeling system is to be put into operation in Kazakhstan by the end of 2024. It will allow predicting water inflow to reservoirs, as well as determining the volume of spring floods and modeling flood zones in an automated mode. This is reported by the press service of the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

The operation of the new system was tested by Prime Minister Kanat Bozumbayev.
The ministries of digital development, innovation and aerospace industry, water resources and irrigation, as well as ecology and natural resources and the Ministry of Emergency Situations took part in its development.

"At the moment, 86 reservoirs regulated by the Republican State Enterprise "Kazvodkhoz" have already been digitized. A digital hydrograph of the runoff of 75 rivers has also been developed, displaying the actual and forecast characteristics of the flow and water levels in the rivers. It is based on data from the RSE "Kazhydromet" and the global flood warning system GloFAS," the report says.

What remains to be completed

Bozumbayev stressed that it is important for Kazakhstan to form its own database and rely on the country's historical data to improve the accuracy of flood modeling.

He instructed the Ministry of Digital Development to complete the digitalization of the terrain of regions regularly subject to flooding, and Kazhydromet to increase the number of observations to assess snow cover, snow reserves and soil freezing.

In turn, the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation must complete the bathymetric survey of the country's key rivers by the end of December.

"After improvement, the system will be put into industrial operation. This is planned to be done by the end of the year. Interested government agencies will also be trained in its use," the government press service reported.

Let us recall that in September the government of the Republic of Kazakhstan allocated more than 500 million tenge for flood forecasting. The allocated funds were intended for the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation. The bulk of them were to be used to purchase equipment, technical equipment and services for conducting bathymetric studies.
