According to the UN, about 85,000 women and girls fell victim to femicide in 2023. About 51,000 of them (60%) were intentionally killed by partners or other family members. This means that one woman or girl dies from domestic violence every 10 minutes in the world, the UN Office on Drugs and Crime in Vienna said, Vlast reports .
- The highest rates of intimate partner and family-related femicide were recorded in 2023 in Africa (2.9 cases per 100,000 women), followed by North, Central and South America, and Oceania.
- In Europe, this indicator was the lowest and amounted to 0.6 cases per 100 thousand women.
UN Women Executive Director Sima Bahous said violence in against women and girls can be prevented. And this requires “robust legislation, improved data collection, greater government accountability, a culture of zero tolerance, and increased funding for women’s rights organizations and institutional bodies.”
“It is time for world leaders to come together and act urgently, to deploy the necessary resources to end this crisis once and for all,” she stressed.
