The new president is being elected on November 24 in Romania, with 13 people vying for the post of head of state. This was reported by Informburo.kz. The president in the country is elected for a term of five years.
There is no minimum threshold for voter turnout in the country, so elections are considered valid regardless of the level of voter participation.
Today, almost 19,000 polling stations are open in Romania. Citizens living abroad began voting on November 22.
According to polls, the front-runner is Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu, who is supported by the country's largest party, the Social Democrats. Ciolacu stressed that he has a "clear plan to create a more developed Romania, where no one is left behind." According to him, the strategy includes an internal course for economic growth and investment, as well as measures to strengthen Romania's international influence and authority.
"Unfortunately, we have political leaders who challenge our membership in the EU and NATO. I believe that extremists should be politically isolated," the center-left leader noted.
Gheorghe Simion, who leads the nationalist Alliance for the Unification of Romanians party, is also seen as a possible contender. He has previously expressed support for Donald Trump's reelection and has been accused of having ties to Russia's GRU.
The 38-year-old politician, who is banned from entering Moldova and Ukraine, categorically denied all allegations of any cooperation with Russian intelligence officials.
