Construction of an LRT depot has begun in Astana, KazTAG reports , citing the City Transportation Systems company.
“With the beginning of the winter period, the LRT project enters the stage of construction of a key infrastructure facility – a depot, which will be located on a territory of 16.84 hectares in the area of the International Airport,” the press service of STS says.
The depot will become the center for servicing and managing the LRT system. The total area of the buildings will be about 80 thousand square meters. They will house all the necessary facilities for technical maintenance and repair of the rolling stock.
The complex includes a building for washing cars, warehouses for spare parts and equipment, specialized equipment for maintaining and repairing tracks, as well as administrative premises for training and improving the qualifications of personnel. In addition, a Control Center for unmanned trains will be created on the territory.
In Astana, the construction of the overpass has already been completed. 799 supports have been erected. In 2025, it is planned to lay the rails, finish the stations, and improve the under-overpass section along Kabanbay Batyr Avenue and Kaldayakov Street. A total of 18 stations are expected.
"It is planned to launch 19 units of rolling stock with a capacity of 652 people. The interval between trains will be 4-5 minutes. At the initial stage, the passenger flow is expected to be 25 thousand people per day, while the maximum passenger flow can reach 92 thousand people per day. The payment system is provided similar to the city one, by validating a transport card or using a QR code," KazTAG reports with reference to the Astana Akimat.
We remind you that construction began back in 2011, and according to the plan, it was supposed to be completed in 2020. First, the deadlines changed, and then the project was frozen due to corruption. In 2023, following Tokayev's order, construction was resumed. It is planned that LRT will finally be put into operation in 2026.
