House of the merchant Karev
Built in 1900 as a tenement house by order of the merchant Alexander Karev, the building remained the tallest in Uralsk for a long time and occupied most of the first street from the moment the city was founded.
The merchant Karev himself died shortly before the end of construction, falling from the scaffolding. According to legend, Karev built the house to spite his neighbor Ovchinnikov, to prevent him from drinking his morning coffee while watching the sunrise over the city. The building now houses the city library and philharmonic society, as well as commercial facilities.
